Substance Abuse Prevention — Campus Efforts

University of Oregon prevention efforts have been cutting-edge and comprehensive over the past fifteen to twenty years.  In 1997, the campus was selected by the United States Department of Education as one of the top substance abuse prevention programs in the country due, in part, to the campus-community coalition in place (CCRTF) and the strong internal coalition (Substance Abuse Prevention Team).  Immediately following the recognition, the campus received extensive funding from the U. S. Department of Education to implement a comprehensive, population-level, social norms effort on the campus (New View 2000).

The following coalitions and departments work together in a coordinated, comprehensive approach with substance abuse prevention, education, and response efforts on the campus:

UO Substance Abuse Prevention Team (SAPT)

The UO Substance Abuse Prevention Team (SAPT) is comprised of campus and community leaders who are focused on a comprehensive, environmental approach in addressing alcohol and other drug issues on the University of Oregon campus.  The Substance Abuse Prevention Team is convened by Sheryl Eyster, associate dean of students in the Office of the Dean of Students. Her role is to ensure that the initiatives and goals of the team are successfully implemented, evaluated, and revised as necessary. This coalition meets monthly.  Students, faculty, and community members are encouraged to become members of the team.  Call 346-1156 or e-mail Sheryl Eyster at seyster@uoregon.edu for more information and ask her for a copy of the most current SAPT Annual Report.

Office of the Dean of Students Substance Abuse Prevention and Education

  • Serves as a clearinghouse for campus and community members to address substance abuse on the campus.
  • Provides services and programs to assist, support and refer students with issues related to substance use and abuse.
  • Provides proactive prevention programs and information related to substance abuse prevention and education
  • Monitors and reviews campus alcohol and drug efforts.
  • Coordinates and make recommendations in developing an overall vision and short-term/long-term goals for the campus regarding substance abuse prevention and education.

University Counseling and Testing Center

The University Counseling and Testing Center offers screening, assessment, referral and follow-up, individual therapy, support classes for students interested in exploring their relationship with alcohol. A New Directions therapy group (offered Fall and Winter terms) is designed to explore addictive behaviors, raise awareness, and provide skills to change undesired behavior patterns. The Counseling Center has provided several outreach presentations and continues to provide ongoing training related to substance abuse assessment to doctoral interns and permanent clinical staff.

University Health Center

The Health Center's professional staff evaluates student's substance use and provides medical consultations, cessation advice and support, and referral services to students who have a substance abuse problem. The health center works closely with the Counseling and Testing Center and refers students to them for further assistance as needed. In addition, the health center staff oversees the peer health education program whereby students go out into their communities to provide their fellow studnets information on various health topics including substance abuse and prevention.

Department of Public Safety

The safety and well being of our students, faculty, and staff is a primary concern of the UO Department of Public Safety.  In support of this purpose, the Department of Public Safety provides timely and courteous service in the areas of public safety, building security, emergency response, information, instruction and training, prevention and investigation of crimes, parking administration and enforcement, and building access control.

Assault Prevention Shuttle

Assault Prevention Shuttle is devoted to the idea that a person regardless of sex, race, religion or sexual preference, should be able to go where they wish at night and feel comfortable and safe. Providing over 9,000 rides a year, APS is a free shuttle service that provides university students, faculty and staff with an alternative to walking alone at night, relying on others to take them home or being stuck in a potentially dangerous situation.

Substance Abuse Prevention Program (SAPP)

The Substance Abuse Prevention Program (SAPP) is designed to provide education and increased awareness in the areas of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug prevention, treatment, and recovery.  All courses are open to community members, students, and professionals.  Contact SAPP if you are interested in state credentialing opportunities, an area of concentration certificate, or practicum experience.

Campus Community Relations Task Force (CCRTF)

The Campus Community Relations Task Force has been in existence since the 1980's and meets quarterly to discuss problems and opportunities impacting the university and surrounding community. The purpose of the group includes creating and sustaining positive, collaborative campus-community relationships, increasing communication between representatives, improving campus climate around issues of safety, and assisting and supporting students in learning about their rights and responsibilities to the greater Eugene community. The group is comprised of UO staff and students, neighborhood representatives, property owners and renters, property managers, law enforcement, businesses, neighborhood associations, city councilors, the Oregon Liquor Control Commission, faith-based communities, media, and 4-J School District representatives. Student Conduct and Community Standards

Using an educational approach, Student Conduct and Community Standards works with students to find solutions to issues around alcohol and other drug abuse.
